Young minds in Volusia County are set to embark on an exciting journey of discovery and creativity this summer. The Lyonia Environmental Center is offering a series of themed summer camps designed to engage children and teens through hands-on activities, wildlife encounters, and educational excursions. These camps run from June through August, providing a diverse range of experiences that cater to different age groups and interests. Participants will have the opportunity to explore nature, learn about environmental conservation, and develop artistic skills under the guidance of experienced instructors.
In early July, the Marine Science Center celebrated the return of Pepper Jack, a rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtle, to its natural habitat near Ponce Inlet. This event underscores the center's commitment to marine life preservation. Meanwhile, back at the Lyonia Environmental Center, preparations for the summer camps are underway. Each camp offers unique themes and activities tailored to specific age ranges, ensuring an enriching experience for all attendees.
The "Slither & Crawl" camp, scheduled for June 9–13, invites children aged 6–8 to delve into the world of reptiles. Under close supervision, participants will interact with resident snakes and lizards, gaining insights into these fascinating creatures. Following this, from June 16–20, the "Imaginarium" camp encourages creativity among kids aged 7–9. Through various art forms like drawing, painting, and sculpture, they will express their understanding of nature, culminating in a family carnival organized by the students themselves.
Another highlight is the "Ocean Waves" camp from June 23–27, where children aged 7–9 will focus on ocean-related issues such as pollution and microplastics. They will also learn how to contribute positively to ocean health. For older participants, the "Florida – Past, Present & Future" camp from July 7–11 takes a historical approach, teaching ages 10–12 about Florida’s heritage and ecology. Field trips to DeBary Hall and DeLeon Springs enhance the learning experience.
Towards the end of the summer, the "Invented by Animals" camp from July 28–Aug. 1 captivates teens aged 12–15 with the concept of biomimicry. Here, they explore how real animals have inspired fictional creatures in movies and video games. Exciting field trips include kayaking in New Smyrna Beach and visiting the Marine Science Center, further deepening their appreciation for both nature and innovation.
As the summer progresses, the Lyonia Environmental Center continues to inspire young explorers through its dynamic programs. By blending education with fun, these camps not only foster a love for the environment but also equip participants with valuable knowledge and skills.
